This year, first graders will be introduced to place value and our base 10 number system, usually by starting with 2-digit numbers (100 or less). This guided lesson helps introduce place value to first graders through instruction and examples targeted to this skill. Place Value 1

1, 2, 3, go! Help your child beat their words per minute game after game with these typing numbers games. Using the numbers at the top of the keyboard, your students will get lots of practice integrating numbers into their sentences and paragraphs. Typing Numbers

This guided lesson provides an introduction to the letter-sound correspondence for consonants N, D, H, J, C, W, V, Y, Z. It also works sound-to-letter and sound-to-image correspondence, which are different strategies to help students decipher pronunciation of unknown words. Not only does this work important listening skills, but teaches kids to look for context clues in what they are reading.

The short E sound, found in words such as leg, lemon and pen, is one of the most common vowel sounds in the English language, and one that first graders will often find in the texts they are learning to read. Once kindergarteners understand the concept of more and less, they will move on to basic subtraction with single-digit numbers. This can be a tricky concept for kids to master. You can help this transition with these exercises that aim to give kids targeted practice in subtraction. Subtraction 1

This lesson is a continuation of place value practice, and offers more instruction on identifying tens and ones in 2-digit numbers. Once first graders are able to quickly identify place value they are then able to understand on a deeper level what larger numbers actually mean. This is crucial for the math fluency that will support higher-level concepts in the later grades.

Comparison is one of the most crucial math skills second graders learn, because it can be applied to so many other disciplines across the elementary school curriculum. This introduction to measurement offers guided lessons in measurement vocabulary, including more, less, small, big, short, tall, empty, full, light, and heavy. Kids will learn how to use objects, such as hands or paper clips, to measure something. They will also learn to measure two people or objects, and compare them with a third person or object. These exercises build preschoolers' foundational understanding of measurement and data.

This year, second graders will be introduced to the concept of multiplication using repeated addition. For example, they will learn that 5+5+5+5+5 is the same thing as saying 5x5. Addition 3

Learning three-digit numbers can be a challenging part of the math curriculum for many second graders. This lesson helps to support second graders' understanding of larger numbers by teaching them place value. Kids will compare three-digit numbers and learn to count up to 1000 with guided instruction. By learning short vowels, kids can decode and decipher these sounds in words they don't already know.
