So many students love to read books in a series but they don't give much thought to what a series really is. In this lesson students discover the two kinds of book series and apply classifying criteria to examples in the library. 

Comparing and Contrasting Book Series

It&rsquo;s time to for your students to move onto learning more complex typing skills! This lesson teaches your students how to type capital letters, periods, question marks, and exclamation marks using correct finger placement.

Typing: Capital Letters and Punctuation

Students will engage their analytical skills and literacy skills as they compare books within a series. The central activity in this lesson will have students identifying, comparing, and contrasting the shared features of books in a series.

Exploring the Features of a Book Series

Understanding how titles, headings, and subheadings work together in nonfiction can help students with writing and with reading comprehension. Students will make observations about nonfiction texts and consider organization choices.  

Judge a Book by Its Pages

Using your acting skills and a great book by Chris Van Allsburg, you will lead your students on an adventure to compare characters and events throughout a book.

What's So Different? Comparing Characters

Students will make a book of homographs using pictures as definitions in order to have a visual connection of the multiple meanings one word can have.

In this lesson, students will explore the meaning of integrity through the book *Stand Tall!*. They will also answer questions connected to making choices with integrity when faced with challenging situations.

In this lesson, students will hear the story *Lovely* and work in small groups to create a book or a symbol of appreciation for others' differences. Students will consider how appreciating differences supports community and relationships.

Appreciating Diversity and Differences

In this lesson, students will explore how to use mindfulness to reflect on, label, and express emotions. They will each help design a page for their classroom book on mindfulness of emotions, including tools to cope with strong emotions.

Analyzing Visual Elements

In this support lesson, your ELs will use key vocabulary and sentence structures to summarize a story. It can be a stand-alone lesson or used as support for the lesson Comparing and Contrasting Book Series.
