Exploring the Narrative

Students will engage their analytical skills and literacy skills as they compare books within a series. The central activity in this lesson will have students identifying, comparing, and contrasting the shared features of books in a series.

Exploring the Features of a Book Series

Caring for the Earth is an important part of responsible decision-making and global citizenship. Through this lesson, students will strengthen their social and emotional learning skills by exploring how they can be a steward for the Earth.

In this support lesson, ELs will learn how to identify the characters and setting in a story while using noun phrases to support their understanding. It can be used alone or as support for the lesson Exploring the Features of a Book Series.

Identifying Character and Setting

Frederick Douglass was an influential black man in U.S. history. In this lesson, the historical context is set for students so that they can conduct their own research on Frederick Douglass, using a graphic organizer and multiple sources, before writing an informational essay on him. Ideal for fourth and fifth grade students, this lesson plan not only gives students practice in research and essay-writing skills, it also has them exploring a fascinating part of our country's history.

Researching and Writing about Frederick Douglass

In this lesson, students will listen to, discuss, and understand two perspectives on a difficult situation. They will flip a coin, with each side representing one side of the story, and role-play the perspectives and reach a resolution.
