If you think about math as a language, expressions and equations are the sentences. This unit brings students into the world of “math language”, learning how to write complex expressions in different forms and convert numbers in one form to another (i.e.decimals to fractions). Last, students will apply the order of operations to interpret and solve simple algebraic equations.

This guided lesson takes kids on an exploration of the world of measurement, from weight to volume to recording data. Commonly, third graders have a difficult time applying math skills to real-world problems, but this lesson, designed by our curriculum experts, will help provide important context for measurement skills. For even more printable practice, consider downloading and printing the recommended measurement worksheets.

This year, third graders will build a stronger understanding of division. This guided lesson uses the repeated subtraction strategy as a way of teaching division. The lesson shows how division problems can be solved by repeatedly subtracting the same number (the divisor). Not only does this help students solve division problems, but it also builds a conceptual understanding of division. For more practice, check out the suggested division worksheets.

Learning to add single-digit numbers is a highlight of the kindergarten math curriculum. You can support addition fluency with this guided lesson that takes kindergarteners through an understanding of values. Kids will learn with focused instruction and practice that by putting numbers together, they get a new number. When the lesson is over, kids can continue practicing addition with our accompanying worksheets.

Learning to type is a vital part of modern education; help elementary school students master the basics of typing with this guided lesson! In a variety of different modules themed around squirrels and gem mining, learners will practice typing letters on the home row (including S, D, F, J, K, and L) as they maintain correct finger positioning.

This guided lesson is perfect for learners in first through fifth grade. Plenty of practice with typing is necessary for young students, especially those who will use computers or tablets in school. The ability to type quickly and accurately can help students take notes, do homework, and even communicate with their friends!

Letter writing is an engaging and important writing format for third graders to master. You can support the development of letter writing expertise with this lesson that provides guidance on the structure and anatomy of a letter. Written by curriculum experts, this lesson will teach kids the various features that make a letter easier to read, and will also offer plenty of opportunities to practice.

As students progress in their typing skills, they'll want to branch out from the home row. This lesson introduces young typers to the top row on a keyboard, allowing them to expand their typing vocabulary and gain independence as computer users. These lessons will help kids exercise correct finger placement, typing accuracy, and speed.

Help your child practice typing the bottom row keys individually and in combination with each other accurately and quickly with these gem mining and flying squirrel typing games. Need a tip? Placing thumbs onto the space bar is a great reminder to help your child have good keyboarding form.

Teaching kids additional subtraction strategies is one way to boost math fluency and comprehension. This guided lesson, designed by our team of curriculum experts, teaches various strategies to find the difference, and provides exercises that help kids to practice these strategies on their own. For more opportunities to practice, try downloading and printing the third grade subtraction worksheets recommended by our curriculum team.

Words work together in a sentence, each one performing a different task. By fifth grade, students have become more adept readers and writers and they are familiar with the basic parts of speech. The activities in this unit revisit some of the basics and also add depth to their existing understanding. Students will engage in such topics as superlative adjectives, correlative conjunctions and prepositional phrases, to name a few.

Learning parts of speech will help third graders to develop a deeper understanding of written language. This guided lesson teaches about adjectives, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections, which is the glue holding most sentences together. Surprisingly, most 5th graders still need to revisit the concepts of complete sentences and fragments and how to punctuate the four different kinds of sentences. Combining shorter sentences into longer, more complex sentences is another skill that requires practice. Students get all of that needed review in this unit, in addition to learning how to identify and fix run-on sentences.

Understanding how our ten number system works enables students to see interesting and useful patterns and relationships in these math activities. These patterns allow students to develop more efficient mental math strategies when multiplying by multiples of 10 or 100. Students will also review rounding and apply this skill to larger numbers - up to 100,000’s place.

Multiplication is essentially repeated addition, or growing numbers by doubling, tripling, quadrupling, and so on. This unit presents mental models and strategies that help students learn and review the concept of multiplication. Students explore multiplication using arrays, partial products, doubling methods and the standard algorithm to solve numerical and word problems. Students will multiply whole numbers and simple decimals by base ten exponents (i.e. .3 x 103).

Geometry in third grade introduces kids to the idea that shapes have different categories (rectangles, rhombuses, etc..) attributes (four-sided, etc...) and areas of different values. This lesson, designed by our curriculum experts, provides the guided instruction and practice that third graders need to conceptualize shapes in a deeper way. In this set of activities students will build on their knowledge of word structure and practice adding prefixes and suffixes, changing tenses and using contractions.

Representing data on graphs makes math visual and involves some creativity and design. Plotting data using fractional units takes their learning one step further. Also in this unit, students learn to measure using both traditional units (like inches, feet and yards) and metric units, and how to convert measurements within each system. The concept of measurement gets two dimensional when students explore measuring and working with angles.

In this lesson, kids are given different strategies for finding the sum of two numbers. Addition strategies such as these help third graders gain a deeper understanding of, and fluency with, this operation. The lesson features guided instruction and plenty of practice problems to apply what is being learned. For even more practice, try our third grade addition worksheets recommended to accompany this lesson.
