Use this lesson to help your ELs make inferences with support. It can be a stand-alone lesson or used as support for the lesson Inferences in Fictional Texts.

A deeper understanding of what constitutes a complete sentence will help your young writers understand how to create technically correct and more complex sentences. This practice will help students edit and revise their writing.

Introduce your students to three sentence structures. In this exercise, students will participate in a reading scavenger hunt as they look for different types of sentences in a short story.

Students will become sentence construction gurus as they learn to craft more sophisticated sentences. Specifically, young writers will use subordinating conjunctions to combine dependent and independent clauses to craft complex sentences.

This is a lesson to introduce the students to an end of the sentence punctuation: the exclamation mark. The emphasis will be correlated to a sentence type, in particular, the exclamatory sentence.
