Understanding our base-ten number system is the foundation for many skills to come. In this unit, students will add on to their understanding of place value and extend to the millions! They will also learn how to read, write and order larger numbers, in addition to decimals to the tenths and hundredths.

If you think about math as a language, expressions and equations are the sentences. This unit brings students into the world of “math language”, learning how to write complex expressions in different forms and convert numbers in one form to another (i.e.decimals to fractions). Last, students will apply the order of operations to interpret and solve simple algebraic equations.

Comparison is one of the most crucial math skills second graders learn, because it can be applied to so many other disciplines across the elementary school curriculum. In this measurement and data lesson, kids will work on object comparison and graphing. The exercises ask kids to list objects in size order, estimate length, note differences in length, and make bar graphs.

This guided lesson builds upon third graders' understanding of multiplication in order to further develop fluency with this operation. The lesson first reinforces the various strategies for doing multiplication (for example, repeated addition), then teaches kids to apply those strategies within practical exercises. Designed by our team of teachers and curriculum experts, the goal is to provide numerous ways to conceptualize multiplication problems.

Teaching kids additional subtraction strategies is one way to boost math fluency and comprehension. This guided lesson, designed by our team of curriculum experts, teaches various strategies to find the difference, and provides exercises that help kids to practice these strategies on their own. For more opportunities to practice, try downloading and printing the third grade subtraction worksheets recommended by our curriculum team.

This guided geometry lesson takes second graders on an exploration of 2D and 3D shapes. Kids will learn how to sort shapes, as well as partition them into halves, quarters and thirds. Tangrams are also featured within the exercise in order to give kids practical ways of practicing their new geometry skills. For more printable practice, try the geometry worksheets recommended by our curriculum advisors to accompany this lesson.

First graders' fluidity with comparing numbers is an important building block for the higher-level math concepts to come in the later grades. You can give first graders a leg up with this lesson, featuring guided instruction and practice problems in comparing numbers. Once kids get through this lesson, you can download and print the suggested comparing numbers worksheets in order to provide even more opprotunities for practice.
